Growing up in my native homeland of India, I always wanted to do something in my life where I could make a difference. I was taught that it was very important for your life to have a plan, and to do something where you could make a positive impact on the lives of others. My school years were a time of research and reflection, as I looked for a way in which I could make this dream become a reality.

[ad#bannermain]

My medical school years were a tremendous experience, as I was exposed to all key areas of medicine. My clinical rotations were an eye-opening experience; I learned that apart from clinical skills, compassion, responsibility, and a kind ear were the most important qualities that a good doctor needs. It was not just about the knowledge of medicine; the also looked to their physician for emotional support and a long-term relationship. These relationships form the fabric of family medicine and allow a family practitioner to provide comprehensive and holistic medical care.

A seed was soaked and soon sprouted, leading me to family medicine. While serving as a House Officer in India, I was involved with a primary health center and mobile health units, which gave me exposure to a broad array of patients similar to the practice of family medicine. A precise discipline, it integrates medical, behavioral, and social sciences in a unique blend. Also during this time, I was able to give lectures to both staff and citizens within the community, on topics including disease prevention education, a key component of family practice.

I have always prided myself on being the best I could be, and realized that, in order to achieve all of my personal and professional goals, the U.S. would be the right place. Family Medicine in the US is highly structured, evidence-based, and community driven. With the highest levels of medical training, education, and technology in the U.S., moving here is an essential part of my preparation to become a Family Physician. Family Medicine will open challenges to me every day by the diversity of cases that it encompasses, which will allow me footing in the doorway of all aspects of medicine.

With this in mind, I came to the U.S. not long after my graduation. Coming to a new land, training, and, in general, acclimating to a new environment, posed quite a major challenge. I simply worked hard and adapted, and I was able to overcome all obstacles which came my way. During my time in the U.S., I have completely immersed myself into my pursuit of medicine. I have served many assignments at local hospitals and medical facilities, have completed many key externships, and have worked on important research projects. I worked at major medical centers and clinics, as well as working within a community-based environment. All of these experiences have provided me with a strong training and educational foundation from which to build my career upon, and I have gained a firm understanding of this country’s medical system, as well as its day-to-day practices and protocols. Now, I feel that I am ready for the next step to complete my residency.

[ad#main-300×250]

My family practice residency program will be final ingredient in my preparation to become a family physician. It will provide me with the necessary experience and tools, which I will need to start my career. I plan to respect the value systems of my patients by attending not only to the medical but also to the ethical, social, spiritual, and aesthetic dimensions of their life. Only then will I be able to realize my dream of being in a position to help others. As a family physician, I am confident that this dream will finally come to fruition.
